F2B402C: Analysis and design of network architecture

Coordinator:

Presentation

The course has both theroretical and practical objectives. The student shall be introduced to network engineering in order to understand what types of mechanisms can be used to implement efficient network services.

The course is split into three modules.

The first module, "Technologies for network engineering", presents a global picture of the tools currently used in broadband networks. TCP behaviour, IP routing, MPLS and Diffserv architectures are presented and analysed. The use of these technologies to support real time applications such as ToIP and IP TV is demonstrated.

The second module, "Practical network engineering" is the "hands on" approach of the technologies introduced in the previous one. It is composed only of practical courses; half of the courses are given on networking equipment, the other half uses simulation techniques to get a deeper understanding of a large network behaviour.

The last module "Analysis and design of network architecture" shall put the students in a situation where they have to apply the concepts learned in the previous modules, on a realistic network design scenario.

A paper control applies to the first module whereas at least one of the labs shall be marked in the second module. A report on the design of a solution for the realistic network scenario shall be marked to evaluate the 3 module.
