F2R421: Mobile data networks

Coordinator:  Georgios PAPADOPOULOS

Presentation

Mobile telephone networks, especially GSM networks, give users access to Internet connection, wherever they may be. Furthermore, thanks to GSM mechanisms, users can remain connected even when they move around. However, although this connected mode is well adapted for telephone communications, this is not the case for computerised data transport. Indeed, the latter is characteristically sporadic and maintaining a connection can mobilise resources which are not necessarily exploited. Today, with GPRS, GSM networks are evolving towards better management of this type of communication.
At the same time, computerised networks are also seeking to exchange the use of cables for wireless technologies such as 802.11 and BlueTooth. For efficient use of available networks, an IP terminal must use Mobile IP which allows users to keep their communications active even when they moving from one Internet attachment point to another.
