This module may be divided in two parts. The first concerns wireless and other cellular networks, including a general presentation of the cellular concept. Specifically, the functions common to these systems are described: roaming, handover, ...
GSM is now the most widely-used cellular system. Many factors made this digital cellular technology a huge commercial success. The detailed study of the radio interface of GSM, made in this module gives a global vision of a specific mobile system.
Practical illustrate the GSM and other cellular concepts seen in the course.
The second part is about telephony and other real-time data transmission over IP. This is becoming quickly a major challenge for operators. The major issues of this question in addition to some protocols are described. The advantages and the disadvantages of some proposed protocols such as (H.323, SIP, MGCP) are identified.
