RES 303 A: Network signalling

Presentation

At the beginning of networks signalling was defined as the set of all signals or messages transmitted to set up, maintain and release telephone communications. In today networks signalling becomes more and more important. It can be transmitted between exchanges or switches at any time independantly from any calls on a dedicated network. Such signalling is called "common channel signalling" and makes a large set of new services possible : mobility, choice of the long distance operator, short messages services, and so on.
