ISA-CLA: Classification

Coordinator:

Presentation

Since the first scientific taxonomy (Andrea Cesalpino, 1583),classification has constituted one of the major themes of natural history, then biology, giving rise to methods, systems, cladism and through phylogenetic structure ( and some other related structures) to the modern theory of evolution. From the end of the 19th century classificatory theories were also used in statistics. Locally it was used to likelihood of belonging to a particular class but globally it was used to divide fields of study into class groups. The growth of electronic calculators in the 60s drained a large part of calssificatory practices towards data analysis and enabled theories and tools founded on geometry and optimisation to be developed. Genetics and molecular biology influenced life sciences and renewed classificatory practices. Classification became aa important tool in new fields like form recognition operational learning and research. Finally, more recently, algebraic logic methods gave birth to the notion of 'conceptual classification' to answer the needsq of Artifical Intelligence.
The aim of this module is to show a 'science and technique of classification students where the algorithm plays a vital role.
