The course has both theoretical and practical objectives. The student shall be introduced to network engineering in order to understand what types of mechanisms can be used to implement efficient network services. The course is split into two modules. The first module, "Technologies for network engineering", presents a global picture of the tools currently used in broadband networks. TCP behaviour, IP routing, MPLS and Diffserv architectures are presented and analysed. The use of these technologies to support real time applications such as ToIP and IP TV is demonstrated. The second module, "Practical network engineering" is the "hands on" approach of the technologies introduced in the previous one. It is composed only of practical courses; half of the courses are given on networking equipment, the other half uses simulation techniques to get a deeper understanding of a large network behaviour. A final control is applied to two modules, and corresponds to 50% of the final grade. At least one of the labs shall be marked in the second module; globally, the mark on the labs corresponds to 25% of the grade. A presentation of a research paper or a white paper on traffic engineering shall be marked, and this corresponds to 25% of the grade. | |
